Match Reports 2010/2011
Welsh League Division Two
Wed 1st Sept 2010 Ely Rangers 1 Dinas Powys 1
This was a fiercely competitive game between two sides who dropped down from division one last season with each having spells of pressure.

Dinas started the game well with Rangers keeper Ian Davies doing well to parry a Ricki Morgan shot and Mark Dunford unable to make the most of the rebound. In the ninth minute an excellent left wing cross from Ollie Dalton found Ricki Morgan in space, and only five yards from goal he made no mistake to give the visitors the lead. Dinas continued to have the better of the game with Jason Davies off target with a couple of shots, at the other end Rangers’ Robert Greatrex should have done better than to head over the bar when well placed. In the twentieth minute Rangers equalised but it was poor play by the Dinas defence when they failed to clear a throw that gave Gareth Fundalski the chance to score from just eight yards. The home side  looked as though they may take the lead a few minutes later when Richard Greaves had a good run on goal but Danny Street’s pressure forced him to shoot wide. Before half-time Geza Hajgato had a free-kick saved by Davis in the Rangers goal.

At the start of the second half Ollie Dalton and Ricki Morgan did well on the left before delivering an inviting cross but no Dinas player could get on the end and yet another good cross from Dalton was deflected to Geza Hajgato but his shot was wide of goal. Rangers came back strongly and if Dinas had edged the first-half then the home side were certainly looking dangerous in the second with Luke Trezise firing wide. When Dinas did put pressure on the Rangers midfield Mike Haywood found Mark Dunford and his cross forced a defender to concede a corner headed over the crossbar by Mike Brooks. Five minutes from time Rangers’ Gareth Fundalski saw red for a second booking. Just before full-time Rangers  must have thought they had won the game when a fiercely struck twenty-five yard  free-kick from Luke Trezise was heading just inside the post but a diving Dave Burnett got a hand to the ball and push it round the post.

This was a good point at near neighbours Ely Rangers with both sides surely battling hard to regain their Division One status at the first attempt.

Welsh Cup Qualifying Round 2
Sat 28th Aug 2010 Newcastle Emlyn 2 Dinas Powys 1
With the start of the league season delayed this was Dinas’s first game in anger after a number of friendlies, and their cause wasn’t helped with seven first team members unavailable.

After an even start it was Dinas who had the first opening when a good Michael Haywood cross was directed towards Mark Dunford but keeper Spencer Cutlan managed to get e fist to the ball to clear the danger. The home side’s reply came following a neat one two on the edge of the area with Sean Jones shooting too high. In the twentieth minutes minute a Dinas free-kick caused panic in the Emlyn defence with the ball bouncing around in the six yard box but no Dinas player could get the finishing touch. A couple of minutes later following an Emlyn corner Sam Thomas shot from twenty yards only to see the ball rebound of an upright. Five minutes before half-time the home side got the breakthrough, Adam Raymond and Anthony Owens put pressure on the visitors’ rearguard and it was Owens who finished with a low shot from eight yards. Within a minute Dinas were almost level when a Kane Wilkes header from close range was pushed away by the keeper.

Dinas’s hopes of getting back into the game were set back in the eighth minute of the second-half, Emlyn broke from deep in their own half and Alex Squires finished with a low shot from eight yards. To their credit Dinas came back well and when James Price was fouled on the penalty spot Mark Dunford converted to give the visitors hope. Dinas continued to press for the equaliser with Mark Dunford’s overhead effort and James Price firing over before the referee’s final whistle saw Emlyn through to the next round of the competition.

With so many players missing the game this was a good effort with plenty of endeavour but lacking the passing that has marked the play in the friendlies. Emlyn were a strong physical side and Dinas can expect to meet a number of similar sides in the second division this season.

Squad: 1. Rhodri Phillips, 2. Rhodri Foote, 3. Ben Dimond, 4. Michael Haywood, 5. Danny Street, 6. Michael Brooks, 7. Rob Price, 8. Barry Pappin, 9. Kane Wilkes, 10. Mark Dunford, 11. Ollie Dalton, Subs: 12. Rhys Davies, 14. Joe Briscombe, 15. Danny Brown, 16. James Price.

Pre season Friendlies
Saturday 21st Aug 2010 Dinas Powys 6 Cardiff Grange Quins 3
Dinas certainly started this game with all guns blazing when born again striker Ricki Morgan got two goals in as many minutes. Liam Jones supplied the first chance with a fine ball for Morgan who went on to coolly lob the keeper, the second came from the penalty spot after a rash challenge on Ollie Dalton by the Quins keeper.

If the home side thought this was going to be easy they soon found differently when the visitors also scored two quick goals to bring them level, both coming from corners, a Quins’ player was given room to turn on the edge of six yard box and fire home and the second coming from a powerful header.

Dinas regained the lead on twenty minutes with Ricki Morgan completing his hat-trick, a quick break saw the ball played over the Quins defence and when two defenders collided it left Morgan clear to again lob the keeper from the edge of the area. Before half-time he should have got a fourth from the penalty spot but the Quins keeper dived to his left to push the ball away.

The home side started the second-half as they did the first with a goal, a good ball found Ollie Dalton wide on the left and his cross come shot sailed over the stranded keeper and into the net for Dinas’s fourth.

Ten minutes into the half Morgan did get his fourth goal,  a long ball from the Dinas midfield  had the Quins defence appealing for offside but with Morgan running from a deeper position he was free to go on and round the keeper before scoring from a tight angle.

The Quins got their third when a good run saw the number seven beat the defence and go on to score from ten yards. But it was Dinas who had the final word in this game when substitute Barry Pappin provided a good left wing cross for Jon Carpentier to rise above the defence and head in.

This was the last of a string of friendlies and with the season starting in earnest next Saturday 28th Aug. Dinas can look forward to a long trip to Newcastle Emlyn for preliminary round of the Welsh Cup followed by their first league game with a visit to near neighbours Ely Rangers on Wednesday 1st Sept.

Saturday 14th Aug 2010 Dinas Powys 1, Cardiff Corries 4
Despite the scoreline Dinas dominated possession for most of the game but the old problem of sharpness in front of goal was plain to see. Dinas created around 8 or 9 good chances and converted just one whereas the visitors created about six and scored four.

Mark Dunford should have scored in the first minute but shot wide. Halfway through the half it was Dunford again who headed down a Jason Davies free-kick but the ball bounced over the bar.
On 35 minutes Corries hit the post with a 25 yard free-kick and just five minutes later, opened the score when Leon Jeanne fired home after keeper Dave Burnett had parried a shot into his path.

Corries made it 2-0 soon after the break, Barry Gunstone firing home after a defensive mistake and just two minutes later added a third, John Knight the marksman.
Dunford finally opened the Dinas scoring 10 minutes into the half, heading home a Jason Davies cross but the Corries made the game safe with another strike from Knight.

Jamie Dix replaced Dunford but could not add to the Dinas tally, a problem Marc Cahill will have to address before the league season starts.

Monday 9th August 2010 Dinas Powys 1 Gors FC 1
Dinas's opponents from the Swansea Senior League proved stubborn opposition  in this hastily arranged friendly and took the lead right on half time, Kevin Miller bursting through from midfield to score from 10 yards. Although Dinas had the lions share of possession they missed several chances to open their account, Jamie Dix could have had a hat-trick.

Marc Cahill made several changes at the break, including the introduction of old Dinas favourite Geza Hajgato. Just 10 minutes into the half Ollie Dalton put in a fine cross from the left which Jamie Dix volleyed home to equalise. Although Dinas were playing some great passing football they could not add to their tally and must get sharper in front of goal when the league season starts.

Thursday 5th Aug 2010 Dinas Powys 2 Afan Lido 4
Another good workout for Dinas against a Lido side full of confidence following last season’s third place in Division One, and an unbeaten run of pre-season games.

Following an even first ten minutes it was the home side who took the lead when Jamie Dix found space on the right and rolled an inviting cross into the path of Michael Haywood who comfortably beat the keeper with a low shot. They held the lead for just three minutes and it was Nathan White who beat a defender and cut into the area before firing past keeper Dave Burnett. Lido took the lead through prolific scorer Mark Jones with an eighteen yard shot. Just before half-time Dinas got a deserved equaliser when the visiting keeper misjudged a high ball into the area that bounced high on the hard ground, he could only get fingertips to the ball as it found the back of the net.
Lido got a third after twenty-two minutes into the second-half when Nathan Doyle’s unstoppable twenty yard shot found the top corner of the net, and completed the scoring when Jones got his second from the penalty spot with five minutes remaining.
Through the second-half manager Marc Cahill changed all ten outfield players and will now have to decide on his squad for the start of the season.
Saturday 2nd Aug 2010 Dinas Powys 0 Port Talbot 3
Port Talbot side came to the Murch with a strong side and even though they played a couple of players on trial it proved too much for a Dinas side still developing and looking for match fitness. Manager Marc Cahill is using these games to assess the players he has at his disposal in a number of positions.

In the first half the home side gave Port Talbot too much respect and room and it was no surprise when the visitors scored in the eighteenth minute, Daniel Thomas finished a run through the Dinas midfield to score from fifteen yards. Seven minutes before half-time Karl Lewis was first to a defensive clearance to fire home from twenty yards. Dinas’s only real chance fell to Spencer Lamb but his shot was straight at the Port Talbot keeper.
In the second-half Dinas came back into the game and competed more effectively. Ricki Morgan’s shot was just too high when he spotted the Port Talbot keeper off his line, but it was Luke Bowen who got the visitors third with a low shot from just inside the area to complete the scoring.

Saturday 31st July 2010 Dinas Powys 2  Briton Ferry Llansawel 0
This was a good test for both sides with Dinas passing the ball well and deserving the win. The defence looked sound with the experienced Danny Street directing operations and in midfield Ricki Morgan and Steve Provis were busy enabling the home side to gain the upper hand with plenty of possession.

Dinas took the lead in the twenty-fifth minute when the referee awarded a penalty for handball and Mark Dunford duly converted. The second came thirty minutes into the second half when Liam Jones managed to direct a corner into the net.

Overall a good display and with one or two players still to come into the side the management team can feel satisfied with the progress so far.

Sun 25th July 2010  Dinas Powys 2  Cadoxton/Barry FC 3
Dinas went a goal down after 8 minutes following poor defending and then conceded a second with an OG by Karl Steel - his first ever.  A good strike by new signing Kane Wilkes, playing as a lone front man in a 4-5-1 formation, brought Dinas back into the game before keeper error led to a 3-1 halftime score. Although those were Cadoxton’s only strikes on goal, Dinas did not trouble the Caddy keeper much despite occasional glimpses of good football, but the real problem was in defence as a mix of triallists, new players, and the absence of some of last years squad due to holidays was taking it's toll.

A few home truths from the Management Team of Marc Cahill, Phil Clay, and Nathan Nurton at half time, and wholesale changes including the introduction of the vastly experienced Danny Street alongside Gareth Shaw at the back, plus a very impressive looking Ben Dimond and a guest appearance by Kieran Blackburn in goal restricted Cadoxton's chances in the second half. While Dinas took more control over the game, a lone strike from new signing Mike Haywood which went under the keeper, was not enough to rescue a result, although despite the 3-2 reverse, that a well organised and talented looking Cadoxton Barry side probably deserved, a vastly improved second half Dinas performance and a 1-0 second half score is a useful platform to build on, with a number of new and old faces still to make an appearance."
