Match Report -
Sun 6th Jan 2008 - Cambrian and Clydach Under 19's 1
Dinas Powys under 19's 3
Huntley The Hat-trick Hero
The Dinas lads produced there best performance of the season
against a skilful Cambrian and Clydach side.
The first half saw a tight and somewhat tactical affair with
Dinas playing a 5 man midfield in an attempt to match the
Cambrian formation. This tactic worked well and the midfield of Aeyard,
Borrill, Whitehead, McIlhiney and Williams created several
chances with McIlhiney particularly unlucky with a long range
shot that was well saved by the home keeper. With less than a
minute to half time a rare Cambrian attack resulted in a ball
from the left falling to a Cambrian forward who looked
suspiciously offside but too his credit he finished well beating
the on-rushing keeper.
The Dinas lads came out all fired up for the second half and
added a greater degree of quality to the tenacity they had shown
in the first half. After both sides had created a couple of half
chances Dinas got the goal they deserved when a ball down the
right was picked up by lone striker Carl Huntley who lobbed the
keeper with a shot from the right hand side of the box. This
visibly lifted the Dinas Boys and a second goal soon followed, a
nice passing move from midfield resulted in a cross from
Williams on the left that was pocked home by the impressive
Huntley. Cambrian
Pressed hard for an equaliser and the Dinas back four of Fisher,
Pursall, Taylor-Moore and Man of the Match Harding defended
resolutely against the mounting pressure.
With Cambrian committing
bodies forward gaps began to appear at the back and it was
inevitable that Huntley popped up to complete his Hat-trick and
seal a well deserved victory.
A special mention goes to sub Clayton Ross who turned up even
though it was his 18th birthday on the day.
Well done lads let's see more of the same next week.
Sunday 11th Nov 2007 - Dinas Powys Under 19s 1 Caerau Under 19's 1 This was a very impressive result for the Under 19's side against last years runners up and current 2nd placed team in the Welsh Youth league(East).
The first half saw the Caerau lads start the brighter and dominate possession for long periods however to the credit of the Dinas boys they dug deep and kept caerau to long range efforts. The back 4 of Ross, Terrar, Ramsey and Teague again looked solid against possibly the most individually talented forwards they have faced this season. Whilst the new central midfield pairing of Borrill and the outstanding Whitehead(Mcshee) showed an excellent work ethic and a great deal of skill when in possession. The Dinas Boys were unlucky not to be in front after 20 minutes when a 25 yard strike from Whitehead thundered against the cross bar and a follow-up shot by Huntley was well saved by the keeper. However Caerau created an equally good chance a few minutes later and Dinas were in-debted to a superb save from keeper Hughes. The game looked to be heading for a half-time stalemate but the impressive number 9 for Caerau created problems for the Dinas Defence coming in off the left wing and the unfortunate Ramsey deflected the ball into his own net. HT 0-1 The talk at half-time was the need to improve the quality of possession and this was shown by a much improved second half performance. More possession in the Full-back area's allowed the 2 wide players to progress into more attacking area's with the tireless Harding on the right and the subtle skills of Williams(who was returning from injury)on the left causing the away side a number of problems. The Dinas equaliser came midway through the second half when some good play down the right resulted in Harding shooting from just inside the box, the shot was well saved by the keeper but Huntley followed-up(as all good strikers do) and smashed the ball home. Both sides looked to win the game and chances were created at both ends Dinas were unlucky with a number of corners and free-kicks that broke in the box whilst a Caerau player was unlucky with a header from close range. With a minute to go a Caerau defender was sent off for what I can only presume was something he said as this was a game of tempo and skill and their was rarely a bad challenge. This was a good performance from the youth side, particularly when you consider several of the Caerau boys were involved at Welsh League 2 level the day before whilst none of the Dinas boys played above local league level. The Youth side still have spaces available in the squad, (particularly in the forward area's) anyone interested please call Darren on 07702797084.
Sunday 11th Nov 2007 - Dinas Powys U19 1 Ton Pentre U19 2 Dinas began this game with only 9 players due to a breakdown on the way to the game and as you would expect Ton looked to exploit the gaps. The 9 Dinas lads performed well and kept the away side to long range efforts whilst also creating a couple of chances of their own. The home side looked to have weathered the early Ton Pressure but a free kick on the edge of the box was played down the right and the subsequent cross was well finished by a Ton Forward. Dinas were soon back to the full compliment with the arrival of Goalkeeper Hughes and Centre back Terrar and took control of the game, the lads knocked the ball around well and looked particularly dangerous from the right side where midfielder Kieran Harding knocked several excellent crosses into the Ton box. It was hard to believe the Dinas boys went in 1 down at half time as they had created at least 5 good opportunities to equalise. H-T 0-1
The second half was a tighter affair with few clear cut chances but The Dinas midfield of Provis, Borrill Doyle and Harding always looked to have the upper hand whilst the back four of Whitehead, Terrar, Ramsey and the outstanding Teague were rarely bothered by the Ton Attackers. Dinas's equaliser resulted from another good move down the right allowing Huntley to crossing the ball across the Ton box with Sprig popping up to poke the ball home, this was a well deserved goal for the enthusiasm and workrate offered by the young Dinas Forward. Dinas pushed forward looking for the winner but the back 3 of Ton Pentre defended bravely against anything that was thrown at them. With 2 minutes to go disaster struck for Dinas when a defender was caught on the ball and the resulting cross saw a Ton Forward smash the ball home. Dinas pressed for an equaliser and deep into injury time a Ramsey headed nestled into the bottom corner of the Ton goal but the offside flag cut short the Dinas celebrations. F-T 1-2
This was probably the youth sides best performance of the season in terms of possession and movement but the same issues continue to be a worry; with only 2 players from a squad of 24 training the previous week and a number of players turning up worse for wear from a night out in town. I will again reiterate the fact that the Under 19's are a talented group but attitude and commitment are the key to success.
Careau (Ely) Under 19's 4 Dinas Powys Under 19's 2 - Sunday 28th Oct 2007 This was an entertaining game and certainly highlighted the talent on show in the McWhirter Welsh Youth League (East).
The game started at a hectic pace and the Dinas lads found themselves in front after 10 minutes when a sweeping move from left to right allowed Nathan McShee to slot passed the keeper at the second attempt. Caraeu hit straight back when hesitance in the Dinas Defence allowed a caraeu forward to smash the ball home from almost on the goal -line. Careau took the upper hand in the game and their passing and movement caused a lot of problems for the Dinas Midfield of Provis,Terrar, Hajgato and McShee. It was no surprise when Caraeu scored their second goal, a scramble in the area resulted in a careau forward tuning and placing the ball past the helpless dive of Hughes in the Dinas goal. The Dinas lads dug deep and the forward pair of Huntley and Pursall were causing problems to the caraeu defenders on the break, so although against the run of play it was not a complete surprise when Huntley popped up to get an equaliser. Dinas looked as though they would head into the break at 2-2 but some poor defending allowed a careau attacker to score unmarked from a corner. HT 3-2
The Dinas Management made a couple of positional changes at half time and this seemed to have a very positive effect. The second half saw a much more competitive affair, with Kieran Harding leading the Dinas Midfield with his workrate and skills. Although not a fluent second half performance, (we gave the ball away too cheaply on many occasions), We disrupted Caraeu's passing and got more of a foothold in the game. The Dinas Lads brought several good saves out of the home keeper; the most notable being a free kick from left back Teague that looked destined for the top corner. With 3 minutes to go Dinas threw their centre backs up front in search of the equaliser but it was Caraeu who capitalised, finishing the Dinas boys off with a goal in the 2nd minute of extra time. FT 4-2
Our next game is Thursday 1st November under the lights at Taffs Well, (7:15pm KO). All support welcome. Bettws Under 19's 0 Dinas Powys Under 19's 2 - Sunday 21st Oct 2007 This was a well deserved result for the Dinas lads and the boys could have easily won by a greater margin.
The first half saw the Dinas boys produce a good level of performance and create several chances, although only able to take a 1 goal lead into half time. Throughout the half the back 4 of Clayton Ross, Graeme Terrar, Carl Ramsey and Dean Teague were comfortable against the Bettws Forwards and never looked like conceding, whilst the midfield of Nathan Mcshee, Dan Doyle, Alex Williams and Michael Provis remained disciplined against a physical Bettws Midfield. Dinas took the lead on 30 minutes when a corner from the left was well finished by Centre back, (and Debutant) Ramsey after a neat flick on by his centre back partner Terrar. The game got something of a nasty edge after that with several poor challenges going un-noticed by the referee - this even continued into the tunnel when a Squamish occurred when the players were walking back to the Dressing room. H-T 0-1
The 2nd half did not see the same level of performance as the first and several enforced changes due to injury seemed to disrupt the Dinas lads. However their effort and endeavour were clear to see and it was well overdue when tireless centre forward Carl Huntley claimed the goal he deserved. The goal was well created by substitute Kieran Harding and was neatly lobbed over the home keeper by Huntley. F-T 0-2
Man Of The Match: Graeme Terrar
This result is reward for the efforts put into the game and the improved attitude of players towards training and game preparation. Next week we have a tough game away at Careau Ely, this will be a good test of how far we have come as a team over the last couple of weeks.
Dinas Powys Under 19’s 0 Ely Rangers Under 19’s 1 - Sunday 7th Oct 2007 This was the Youth teams 4th game of the season and 4th loss of the season. This can be attributed to players lack of commitment to training and games, whilst the exodus of players to university has also been detrimental to the team.
This game was certainly the best performance of the season so far with numerous players showing the required commitment to compete at this level. The 1st half saw Ely create several early chances and they were unlucky not to take the lead when hitting the cross bar on 2 occasions, however the Dinas lads soon gained the upper hand in the game and dominated possession for long periods. The Dinas Defence was being well marshalled by Kieran Harding whilst Captain Graeme Terrar was giving his usual commanding performance. The Dinas Midfield were battling for every ball and the central pairing of Kevin Boulton and Alex Williams were showing some nice moments of skill.
The second half saw a more even game in terms of possession and territory but the Dinas forward line of Carl Huntley and Danny Smolinski cut the Ely defence open on several occasions but were well thwarted by the impressive Ely goalkeeper. The game looked to be heading for a 0-0 draw but Ely forward Nick Breen had other idea’s and with just 4 seconds left on the clock, (confirmed by the referee after the game) he controlled a ball from the left and lashed the ball passed the helpless home keeper. This was a harsh lesson for the young Dinas side who deserved at least a draw for the efforts they had put into the game.
This is potentially a very talented youth squad but levels of commitment to training and games needs to improve to develop as a successful side.
The Under 19’s do not have a game next Sunday, (October 14th) but will be holding a trial game at Bryn-y-Don, (meeting at 1pm). Any new players interested in attending please contact Darren George on 07702797084
Risca U19 0 Dinas Powys U19 2 - Sunday 21st January 2007 This was a good result for the youth, in a game played in high winds and on a very boggy pitch.
Once again Dinas showed there battling qualities in difficult conditions, with the defensive unit of Flyn, Pursall, Rees and Williams performing heroics. The midfield was again led by captain Provis, whilst wide players Fisher and Griffiths worked tirelessly. The First Dinas goal came from top scorer Alderman after good work down the left from Carol and Griffiths. The second goal quickly followed when a Griffiths shot took a nasty bobble to leave the home keeper stranded. Dinas finished the half strongly and were confident of adding more goals in the second half.
After the break Risca were the dominant force and stretched the Dinas defence on several occasions, thankfully O'Connor in the Dinas goal was alert to everything thrown at him. With 30 minutes to go Dinas threw on there two young subs who both performed well in the difficult conditions.
This was a well deserved result for the youth, made all the more impressive by the fact the team that finished the game contained 4 players of 17 or under. Joint Man of the Match went to the centre back pairing, whilst a special mention goes to Williams who has performed excellently in his new position.
Caerau Ely 2 Dinas Powys 3 - Sunday 3rd Dec 2006 The young Dinas side won this game with a fine battling performance against a strong Caerau side.
The Dinas lads played with the wind in the first half and took a 2-1 lead into the break. The first goal came from the penalty spot after centre forward Carol had been hacked down in the box. Carol brushed himself down to slot the ball home. The second goal was scored by top scorer Alderman after a nice move down the left. The Dinas midfield led by inspirational captain Provis were totally dominent and several more chances were missed before Caerau broke well down the Dinas left to pull a goal back.
The second half saw the Dinas lads put under early pressure and within 5 minutes of the restart another good move on the left led to a Caerau equaliser. With Caerau pushing forward in search of a winning goal, the Dinas lads began to create numerous chances on the break. Young sub Griffiths was a constant menace to the home defence and his neat skills created 2 good chances for Alderman, both well saved by the home keeper. With 5 minutes remaining Alderman slotted home the winner after a good through ball from Terrar. Both sides should be comended for the football they played in very difficult conditions.
The man of the match award was shared by Provis and Griffiths. Whilst Alderman has now scored 10 goals in 10 games.
AFC Porth 1 Dinas Powys 4 - Sunday 12th Nov 2006 The Dinas lads won there first game of the season away to bottom side Porth.
The Dinas lads arrived late for the kick-off due to transport problems and this lack of preparation was clear to see in the first half. A deflected early goal saw Dinas take the lead but the home side equalised when the Dinas midfield switched off and allowed a Porth player to ghost into the box and tuck away a cross from the left.
The second half saw a much improved performance. With the introduction of centre forward Tucker seeming to lift the away side. Dinas took the lead after a fine one-two between Alderman and Tucker saw Alderman slot home. Alderman grabbed a second soon after and the victory was completed when a break down the right resulted in a fourth Dinas goal.
Man of the Match went to left back Clark whilst Muff was given to the extremely hungover Williams.
Welsh Youth Cup - Sunday, October 29th 2006 Dinas Powys 2 Cwmbran 2 (Cwmbran win 5-3 on penalties) The youth side faced Cwmbran Town, (the leaders of the Welsh Youth League East division) in the Welsh Youth Cup.
The first half saw quite an evenly contested tie with Cwmbran shading the possession and taking a narrow 1-0 lead into the break. The tricky number 9 for Cwmbran had been well marshalled by the solid Dinas Defence but when he managed to get a shot off it took a nasty bobble to beat Morse in the Dinas goal.
The second half saw Dinas get to grips with the extra man Cwmbran had in the middle of the park. This allowed increased possession for the Dinas midfield of Borrill, Clark and young subs Griffiths and Fowler. Dinas got themselves back into the game with a fine finish from lively forward Alderman. Cwmbran took the lead again after 65 minutes when hesitation in the Dinas defence allowed the Cwmbran forward to scramble the ball home from 5 yards. Things got worse for Dinas when outstanding centre back Terrar had to leave the field with what looked to be quite a serious Knee injury. This left Dinas with 10 players as both subs had already been used. Dinas got their equaliser late on when a well struck free kick by Alderman took a wicked deflection to beat the Cwmbran Keeper.
Extra time saw the 10 men of Dinas defend resolutely with Provis and Fairhurst in fine form, whilst Tucker the loan forward worked tirelessly for the team. Dinas unfortunately lost the Penalty shoot out 3-1, which was not a fair reflection of the efforts put in by the home side. The young side can be proud of their efforts and are progressing nicely. it should also be noted that 11 of the 13 involved in this game are eligible for this competition again next year.
Ely Rangers 2 Dinas Powys 2 - Sunday, October 15th 2006 Dinas produced their best performance of the season to gain a 2-2 draw against a vastly experienced Ely Rangers side. The home side played with the wind and the slope in the first half but were unable to get a foothold in the game due to the tireless work of the Dinas midfield; the new central pairing of Clark and Carrol showed superb battling qualities in the middle of the park whilst the wide pair got forward at every opportunity. Although the home side had the lion share of possession they could not breakdown the rock solid Dinas Defence with central defender Graeme Terrar putting in a man of the Match performance, just shading his central defensive partner Owen Persil. The Dinas forward line of Alderman and Fowler although starved of quality ball created several chances on the break and were unlucky not to find the net. The Dinas lads were very unlucky to go in 1-0 down at half time, (a cruel deflection allowing a Rangers forward to slot home).
The second half saw a more offensive performance from the away side with the introduction of Dave Lloyd adding a bit of physicality to the Dinas forward line. However it was the Home side who scored first increasing their lead after a mix up in the Dinas defence. Dinas struck back immediately when a deep cross from the left found young sub Daniel Griffith who smashed the ball over the keeper into the far corner of the net. The Dinas equalizer came from another fine move down the left, which lead to a cool finish across the keeper into the far corner. The home side piled on the pressure in the last 10 minutes of the game but the Dinas lads stood firm.
The Dinas lads can be very proud of their performance; they are the first side this year to take a point or score a goal against a very strong Ely Rangers side. Well done lads.
Dinas Powys 1 Cambrian and Clydach 3 - Saturday 16th September 2006 This was a promising performance from the young Dinas lads against a more experienced Cambrian and Clydach side. The away side included 5 players who had turned out in Welsh League 2 on the Saturday but it was the Dinas lads who exerted the earlier pressure, creating two good chances - both well saved by the keeper. The half looked destined to be goal less with the Dinas back four of Provis, Fairhurst, Pursall and Fisher looking comfortable against the Cambrian Forwards, whilst the tireless efforts of Terrar and Clark in the centre of midfield nullified the extra man Cambrian had in that area. However Cambrian managed to grab a 1-0 half-time lead after a scramble in the Dinas penalty area fell nicely for a Cambrian shirt who finished from 8 yards. The second half saw the home side under increased pressure and it was somewhat against the run of play when Dinas equalised from a set-piece. A nice cross from Right midfielder Sam Alderman fell to young sub Adam fowler who scored his first goal at this level. Dinas continued to defend well but as tiredness crept in the gaps began to show and the substitute Cambrian forward, (all 6 foot 6 inches of him) claimed the second goal. With time running out the Dinas lads pushed forward for the equaliser but just as last week got caught on the break allowing Cambrian to seal a 3-1 victory. This was a solid performance from the young Dinas side but it could certainly be improved if more players attended training regularly. |
